Helen Marie Evans Renfroe (“Tean” to her family and friends) passed away on December 25, 2017. She got her first glimpse of our beautiful world on June 24, 1937 in Speedwell, Tennessee. She was the daughter of the late Audie Evans and Alice Mayes Evans. She was also preceded in death by her devoted sister, Ruth (“Bubie”) Evans. She is survived by her husband Ronnie Renfroe, her daughter Alicia Mischa Renfroe (John Hart), and sister-in-law Pat Renfroe Madden (Roy Wilson). She met Ronnie while teaching in Bartow, Florida, and they later moved to the mountains of East Tennessee. She was a member of Haynes Flat Baptist Church where she served as organist for many years and was a charter member of the Powell Valley Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron, Conductress, and pianist. A dedicated and enthusiastic teacher for over forty years, she began her career in her early twenties at Blair’s Creek, a one-room school located near Tazewell, Tennessee. She taught for several years at Bartow Elementary and then spent most of her career at Powell Valley Elementary. She earned a B.S. from Lincoln Memorial University and an M.A in Education from Union College. She was recognized by “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” and received several teaching awards, including a Tennessee Golden Apple. Her family will receive friends on Friday, December 29th from 5-7pm at Reece Funeral Home and Chapel in Harrogate, Tennessee. A brief service by family, students, and friends will follow at 7pm. Interment will be on Saturday, December 30th at 11am in the Robertson Family Cemetery. Pallbearers: Jim Beeler, Bill Bolton, Danny Gibson, Aaron Robertson, Larry Robertson, David Robertson.
